About Our Club

Mission

The mission of the Sonoma County Sol is threefold:

1. To increase interest in soccer in the North Bay region
2. To compete and win in premiere minor league championships
3. To provide community benefit through athletic and community leadership

Vision

The Sol is presently the premiere adult soccer club in the North Bay, and the club competes at the highest level of any soccer club in the region.  The Sol is committed to winning regional and national championships and developing players so that they can continue to play at an advanced level.

By hiring the best training staff, instituting a recruiting program that pursues the best players in the region, and conducting a training program that challenges the players technically, tactically, physically, and mentally, the Sol strives to become the top overall semi-pro soccer club in Northern California.

In the process of building a solid organization off the field and moving into higher tiers in the U.S. soccer pyramid on the field, the Sol strives to remain a steward of the community, establishing mutually beneficial partnerships with youth soccer clubs, the surrounding communities, and private businesses.  If you have questions, special requests, or would like to inquire about any type of partnership, please email us at info@sonomasol.com

Playing for the Sol

We hold open tryouts once each year, usually in December.  We are always looking to add talented players to our club and understand that our open tryouts may not provide an opportunity for everyone to tryout, so we do provide players an opportunity to present themselves as a candidate at any point during the year.   If you are interested in becoming part of the Sol, please send a CV/resume, along with a recent letter of recommendation from a coach, to vinny.cortezzo@sonomasol.com.  We will contact you within a week of your submission if we are interested in seeing you play.

History

Founded in 2004, the Sonoma County Sol was formed to operate amateur, and perhaps some day professional, soccer teams for men around Sonoma County, California.  The Sol is a non-profit organization in which management is overseen by a volunteer board.

The Sol competes in the Western Division of the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL), a nationwide semi-pro league which in 2014 grew to over 80 clubs in 4 divisions.  Commonly regarded as the 4th tier of soccer in the U.S. under Major League Soccer (MLS), the North American Soccer League (NASL), and the United Soccer Leagues Professional Division (USL Pro), the NPSL is a highly competitive league.   Every year the club participates in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup, a one hundred year old men’s soccer tournament beginning with amateur teams and working it’s way up to the professional ranks including the MLS; the tournament is compared to the FA Cup in England. The Sol has had tremendous success in this tournament and in the 2009 and 2010 seasons played the Portland Timbers, who shortly thereafter joined the MLS in 2011.  In 2009, the Sol hosted the Timbers in front of over 2000 fans at Santa Rosa High School.

The Sol take pride in playing offensive, attacking style soccer.   The players care as much about the result of their matches as they do about putting on a great show for our supporters.

The players have a wide-ranging pedigree and consist of post-professional, post-college players, college, and high school players, many with roots in Sonoma County. Nearly every player on the roster lives or has played soccer in Sonoma County at some time during their youth or professional soccer career.

The Sol has had great success on the field in the 11 years since inception.  Notable achievements include the following:

NPSL National Champions - 2009
NPSL National Runner Up - 2005, 2013
NPSL Final Four – 2007, 2008
NPSL Golden Gate Conference Champions - 2007, 2008, 2009, 2013
NPSL Post Season Presence - 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2012, 2013, 2014
USASA National Champions – 2006
USASA National Runner Up - 2014
USASA Regional Champions - 2007, 2009
